The Corvette Black Book says it started in 1993 and last year was 2014. Funny thing I found is only one Torch Red coupe was made in 2005! Anyone have that one? 2006-2009 there were no Torch Red.
looking at a red 1995. thinking seriously about it. Just a stock coupe. one owner. my mechanic has done all service on car since warranty ran out. It is very clean. owned by wealthy guy, well taken care of, guy is now into boats and selling other toys. 75,000 miles. The attractive thing to me is that the car has a known history. Looking at two others locally that were bought at auto auction and other than car fax history is unknown. neither is as clean as the red one.
Seems like half the corvettes I see are red, including 1981 of my son's sitting in driveway. LOL.
My son tells me black is actually the most common color for corvettes. My Dodge Magnum is red as well as his vette.
And before that there was Bright Red, Ruby Red, and Dark Red Metallic.
According to the Black Book, 118,307 red C4's were produced. Who knows how many were coupes and how many were verts?
I have a 1986 Coupe painted Bright Red. My friend has a 1996 Convertible painted Torch Red. When they are parked side by side it is interesting to note the contrast. Torch Red is brighter (or lighter, however you want to describe it).

Since the C4 generation began, some form of red has been the most popular color, right up until 2003 or so. I believe in 1996, silver beat out Torch Red for #1 by a small margin, only for that one model year.
If your son had told you that red is the most common Corvette color, I wouldn't argue with him; but black is not.
* At an earlier meeting, a discussion of paint quality and paint colors for future years of Corvette had dragged on so long that John Heinricy, then leading Corvette’s development group of test drivers, couldn’t take it any longer. “Why are we even having this discussion?” he asked. “All Corvettes are red. The rest are mistakes.” *
