Default heater hoses

Can anyone tell me what the hose is that tees of the heater hose on the 89 corvette? It tees off the larger 3/4" hose and is about 1/4 or 3/8 dia.
It seems to run over the top of the engine.

That is known as the "steam hose".

I have never seen a description of exactly what it does or how it works.

Is it a necessary part? My two heater hoses are looped and that caused one o kink off flow. I fixed it yesterday and was wondering if no flow or lack of flow would affect the end component of the small hose.

GM thought it was necessary, but I have heard of people removing it. How do you really know if that causes a problem or not?

It could be years before a problem shows up -- said the guy who just replaced a rusted out head gasket. Fel-Pro said I didn't change my coolant often enough. Was that really it or was it because I put Dexcool ("compatible with any cooling system") in my car without thoroughly flushing out the old green stuff?
