Default Help identifying a mystery wire

I need help identifying a mystery wire. In the once in a blue moon i decided to check the spare tire air pressure, i found this corrigated tube protected black wire dangling down from the license plate area. The only thing i could think of it could have to do with my back up lights that have never worked on the car. I have never bothered to shake them down as is not required for Texas Vehicle Inspection. What do you guys think? 92 model

I guess not. I didn't know there was one. Where is it located?

If your reverse light don't work and you've got this broken wire there, id say its a great place to start....

You can't see the other end of it someplace where this can reach?

Here ya go:

It comes on when the interior lights are on so I opened the door to take the picture.

There's something wrong with mine. It's usually much brighter than this. My FSM says it's a #194 bulb.

I found the spare tire lamp. It appears all wires are connected to it as well as wires connected to the back up lamps. So the mystery is still not solved.

For sure there is only one wire and it's black. You should be able to open the conduit maybe 12" further up and see if there's anything else in the conduit.

If indeed it's a single black wire I believe it would be safe to assume it's a "broken" run to a ground splice and explains why you have no rear back up lamps. I'd connect an alligator clip lead to it and run it to a good ground and see what happens. Rear B/U lamps I'd guess. The wire could also be what's broken or missing at the B/U lamps so look at the B/U lamps also.

The actual ground is way forward and the lamps are all done through splices to that ground.

Even tough maybe not required I'd think it nice to have functional B/U lamps.
