Ok guys... I am trying to learn everything I can before buying... I had originally wanted a C3 but after some thought, I decided to go with a newer car.
I have set my sights on the 92-96 years and want some input.
I don't recall any major changes from 92-96 but I thought I would ask the experts here.
What changed and why? Improvement or just a change?
Do you have a preference for a model in those years?
My only requirements are that it is a 6speed and convertible, the rest is up for grabs. Anything special I should know about the tranny or about convertible C4's in those years?
Has anyone installed that gadget to override that 1st to 4th skip? Is it a real problem or is it liveable without modding it?
there were refinements every year. just get the newest you can find/afford that is equiped the way you want.
the optispark was modified in '95 i think to help with longevity.
the CAGS (shift 1 to 4) i live with, no problem, but is easily bypassed if you want.
'96 was the only year for the LT4, if you want a little more power, or a ZR-1 (last year was '95) if want a lot more!
oops! sorry just remembered you want a vert, no ZR-1 verts.

He's right.
Other things changed are:
'94 had passenger side air bag, and '95 and '96 got different side vents. Six speeds are rather difficult to find. I don't recall any six speed for any C4 for sale when I was looking for my 'vette. They came standard with an automatic tranny, and six-speed was an option and they would order it from the factory. Most dealerships would just order a bunch and have them on the lot, most were autos. Good luck. Keep us informed on your car search.
EDIT: The CAGS eliminator is a waste of money. It's a resistor with a fancy packaging. You can rig up your own CAGS eliminator by spending all of $.50 at Radio Shack. http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...adio_shack.htm
How much difference is there between the LT4 and the LT1? I know some of the technical diffs but what is the street difference? Is it more a seat-of-the-pants thing?
There was a slight change in the cam from '92-'93.
The '92-'93 were speed density where the 94-96 were MAF.
The interior changed slightly in '94 due to the passenger side airbag, the seats were changed also. Much easier getting in and out in the '94-'96.
But the '92-'93 seats hold you better in turns and stuff.
Never rely on seat of the pants, they don't tell the truth.
The LT4 was GM's last hurrah before releasing the LS1 in the C5.
It was purposely underrated at 330hp due to the fact they couldn't have an older model out powering the newer model that was to be released the next year.
I've never driven or ridden in a LT4 car so I can't give you an impression, but I have raced a few at the track and depending on the driver, those things scream.
I had originally envisioned spending between 10 and 15K for a C3, but now that I have moved my sights to newer cars, I am pushing that up to 20K. Anything more than that I would have to finance and I am sick of car payments.
I am currently leasing (big mistake, I can't leave a car stock and modding a lease is like throwing money out the window) The lease is up in January so I need to get a car in November or December so I can be sure everything is coapcetic. It needs to be a daily driver !
I got my '94 LT1 for 16,981 with 45k miles. You shouldn't have a problem finding an LT1 under 20k. I initially wanted a stick but I found this one. It had all the options and colors I wanted but the six speed. Test drove it anyways and fell in love.
one thing to know though is if you get a vert. It'll leak. You're lucky if it doesn't but bring a towel just in case. :D
I have a Primo 96 LT4, one of 79 made like it, Black/Black - F45, LOADED...It has less than 17,000 miles on it......email or Im me if you might be interested.
If you want a 96, you HAVE GOT to go for an LT4, it's all the difference in the world, but any 92-96 is a great car.
Since you want a vert and 6-sp you should get a 93' 40th. They seem to be holding there price well and they look really sharp! :yesnod: The CAGS bypass was a piece of cake to install! :D
DCTC: I have my heart set on a Vert, but if I can't find one and you are still looking for a buyer, we can talk turkey :yesnod:
I tell ya, I am stoked... I have always wanted a Vette... and I have my heart set on a Vert, but even if I can't find one I like, the 6 speed is non-negotiable... no offense to you folks who have and love your autos... but I wouldn't, couldn't own a Vette with an auto. (Well.... as long as I have 2 legs that is :nono: )

No prob......If you're looking for a vert, tho....a 96 Collector, or even a 93 Vert, like Shawn (9vette3) suggested would be cool!!
If you go with the conv. get the glass window. I dont know what year it started. Mine is a 93 and it is plastic. So I know it is after that. If you have your heart set on a 6sp and a conv. hold out till you find it. The 6 sp 96 would be my choice since you will get the LT4 engine. Good luck in your hunt.
