Hi, Here's an interesting one-put new gears in left headlight-it opens and closes now fine with hood open - if hood is closed the left headlight opens but motor keeps running-won't do it if hood is open-a little baffling. I disconnected the motor connection again and am thinking may just replace the motor with a whole new assbly. Wiring and connections look good and everything's fine if hood open. Also, when I split case halves I didn't touch the motor.
There are switch contacts inside the headlight motor that control which direction it turns. Your problem might be in that area. There is a second set of contacts on the right hidden under the motor brush:
The motor shaft moves back and forth when the headlight hits the stops. That's what does the switching. On my car there are three relays mounted next to the vacuum tank that make all this happen. Later years had a module that used a different method. I don't know how the '84s are set up.
The relays are under this cover:

Cliff, you're right about the limit switches. The '84-'87 headlight motors have this design. These limit switches need to be clean, or the headlight may not open or close properly. The motor bearings need to be lubricated with a light weight grease, like Lubriplate white grease, so the motor armature can shift to actuate the switches, or the motor will continue to try to run, resulting in a dead battery.
Thanks guys, I ordered a new left motor assbly today ($260) and I'll isntall that later in week - I did take that cover off and looked at relays-wires all look good everywhere-low miles car- I may put a new relay in , too since they're not expensive. I'll let you know what happens-right side works perfectly.
Got new left side motor from Corvette Central ($260) and installed it-end of problem-I got a new motor so I could keep my old one and do a post mortem on it and see if I can fix it. Got a new relay , too but didn't need it -at least I have one around for future trouble shooting.
