Brakes
The standard is 12 inch discs, the J55 option uses 13 inch discs they are used on ZR1 and was an option. (The Grand sport has the corvette wording and look good)They are a straight forward bolt on as long as you have the J55 callipers and brackets.
There are many brake upgrades available for corvettes you just have to look online, check corvettecentral.
Have you tried Hawk brake pads? friction is what stops you, a lot of friction is required to make the vettes brake as they should.
Installing basic roadcar brakes that are kind to discs will make you fear to take the vette on the highway, it will barely slow down when you stand on the pedal. Hawk street or HP Plus pads are the way to go, i would never look back they are that good.
The J55 setup with Hawk HP plus brake pads have never let me down on the street or many laps on the track, i know standard brake pads will only do a few laps and they just disintegrate.
The only down side with Hawk HP Plus brake pads is the amount of brake dust and can be noisy when cold so if you do not do track work use the HP street brake pads.

The Hawk HPS pads with 12" rotors is more than adequate for the street.

Just completed 3 days of a very spirited 3day run on the twisties of the Appalachians. The ZR-1 has the bigger brakes, but the HAWK HPS pads put the car on another level - far as braking was concerned. They never faded, and provided 40+% more braking (as advertised!) than the stock pads. In fact, I'm no longer considering the brake upgrade some of my brethren have done; the HPS's were that good!

The J55 is a 13 inch vs 12 inch rotor uprgrade and a beefer caliper than what you have now. As long as you have the abutment brackets and the bolts and calipers it will bolt right up to your existing hardware.
In 1996 all Collector Editions and GS models had the C4 scripted logo on the side face of the caliper. The rest of the calipers were just stock silver. This is prob the biggest bang for the buck brake upgrade you can do on your car and mated with some fine hawk racing pads whould be good perfromance for your street ride.
Just unbolt the old calipers and bracket and remove the rotor. Re install the new brake components and you're done!...
