Default Temp Sensor help!

I have 94 C4 having two temp sensors.
What should the front sensor read?
Iam getting -5 on my friends Snap-on Scan tool.
Dash temp sensor reads fine.
Someone please explain!
Tks

Since resistance goes up as temp goes down, it sounds like you have a bad sensor or open in the line to the ECM.

The temp sensor at the front of the engine sends the temp reading it gets to the ECM.
The gauge gets its information from the sensor on the passenger side near the rear of the block.

The CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) on the front of the engine is used by the ECM. It sends the temperature to the dashboard, where it is displayed on the digital part of the temperature gauge.

You can check the connections to the CTS. Unplug the connector and measure the voltage on the connector pins (ignition on). They should measure 5 volts. This voltage comes from the ECM. If the voltage is incorrect then there might be a problem in the wiring, connector pins, etc.

You can measure the resistance on the pins of the CTS itself, which should correspond to the following temperatures:
