ive been working on my 86 for three months rebuilt motor,wiring,sensor,etc
i took it for its first run ran great not a problem anyway yet. the speedometer isnt working stays on zero. can someone direct me to a good read on trouble shooting display and speedometer.

The connections are pretty simple. The VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is mounted in the tailshaft of the transmission. It is basically an AC motor that is spun so it acts like an alternator. You can test it by spinning it with a drill and measuring the output. I did it with an oscilloscope, but you can use a DVM set on AC volts (the voltage is zero when the VSS is not turning and goes up with speed):
The signal from the VSS goes directly to the dashboard. You can measure the voltage at the dashboard connector. The signal comes in to connector J1 on pins D11 (yellow wire) and C15 (purple wire). This verifies that the signal is getting to the dashboard. This is the way I did it:
