Sheesh, I thought I had all the oranges the factory had to offer on the front hood of my '70. Guess they saved some for my '87. I'm hand buffing the car using Wizard's line of products and very closely inspecting the paint surface. (I'm afraid to break out the power tools with the buffing compound!) This car has never been repainted and I think I'm seeing some teeny spots of orange peel! The car has been touched up in a few spots, but it has not had a full repaint. Has anyone else noticed this or are my eyes deceiving me? I'm working in the front hood on the front driver side corner. ~Juliet
Take a walk up to your local Chevy dealer and closely inspect a C5. I think you'll find that things haven't changed much since your 87 rolled off the line! :(
I had heard that they updated the paint system when the C5's started out. They still look great when they are new, but I expected better.
My '96 has probably one of the best paint jobs I've seen on a Vette. I was at a local dealership a couple of weeks back...and the orange in the new C5 in the showroom was terrible.
I will definately look at the C5s next time I'm getting parts at the dealer. :)
Since this is base coat / clear coat, these things aren't going to buff out, are they? :( Rats. Oh well, at least I'm making some progress on the swirls. :) I've got half the hood done using first cut. Then I have a round of the finishing compound, and then a few coats of glaze. :) It's looking light years better, albeit not perfect. ;)
Now, what can be done about rock chips in faded paint? ~Juliet
Best factory paint award goes to those guys back in the '60s that still used hand rubbed laquer for all the cars. I think those look awesome, myself. The difficulty of applying a good laquer paint job on any car is very high. Laquer paint on cars is a lost art nowadays. I wish I saw more.
