my 87 hood is very heavy to open. replaced the 2 small lifters, mad no difference, found a replacement hood support at Zip Corvette that is pressurized only problem is that the mounting is different that my current support, it uses a ball stud as opposed to what I have which is just rivited top and bottom, and Zip says the do not carry the mounting kits any longer, Anyone have any thoughts??

The 2 small hood assist struts should easilly hold the hood open and you have to pull the hood down quite a bit before it wants to fall, the hood is so much easier to open and pull up with a couple of fingers.
A massive difference compared to bad hood assist struts where you need a lot of effort to lift the hood.
If your hood will not stay up with just the two small assist struts they are no good.
Try corvettecentral and stay away from reconditioned ones they do not last.
I bought Sachs struts from rockauto for less than $20/pr. I can easily open my 87 hood with two fingers and it doesn't want to drop until it's at least a quarter of the way down. I think yours are defective.
I replaced the assist struts and now the hood flies up when I lift it about half way. When I first put them on I had to pull really hard to get the hood out of the open position. I do have the gas strut hood support, so that helps.
I replaced mine with a gas assisted hood prop from an 88-89 that came with all the hardware needed. I also bought two new small assist struts and the hood would fly open ....too fast. Put the old small ones back in and now everything is easy to open and close.

Thats exactly what I was going to do. I bought the larg strut but Zip Corvette did not have the mounting hardware. My plan was to put the large one in and remove the 2 small ones, what do yo think??thats if I can find the hardware, if you are using yours do you want to get rid of them??

Whatever came with the "kit" I am using, and whatever I didn't need I don't have anymore.
