Update!
Called the mechanic today adn here is the diagnosis (sort of). He said there was "a lot" of coolant in the crank case which is leading him to believe it is an intake gasket. What do you guys think. He won't be able to work on it again until Monday.

I'd still do the heads while you are in there. That way you'll have a new top end. All you will have to worry about is the bottom half in the future. IMHO.
I know you are having a rough time coming to terms with this, I would too. You may as well 'do it right the first time'
