Default speedometer

I have a 1994 convertible auto. while driving it stays in first gear to long then it hard shifts up and the check engine light comes on. brought it to my buddys shop thinking it was a speedometer module.
He went thru many checks but still the same. checking with others it seems the cruise control moduale, the radio, or the cluster can cause the same problem. found the wire in the computer plug(I can't remember the color I think green) that is suppose to have 7> volts on it .I Only have 5volts. Disconnected the cruise module still the same.
My big problem is the radio has been changed and car has had a lot of wiring add on/changes and its a real rats nest under the dash.
Before I start taking all the wiring out to find what I need to check
does anyone have any other suggestions.
any help appreciated
Robbie

The check engine light indicates a trouble code has set. To retrieve the code short pin 4 to pin 12 with a piece of wire. Turn the ignition On and the codes for each module will be displayed in the Speedometer LCD.

Your transmission is shifted electronically by solenoids so the code will most likely be a Module 4 Power train control module code.

Module 1 are CCM codes
Module 4 are PCM codes
Module 9 are ABS/TCS codes
Module A is Air Bag codes

The diag. connector is located above the drivers right knee under the dash.
