I have a 88 convertible with auto trans. The shift indicator stays in first gear although I can shift through all my gears. I don't make a habit of shifting from low to OD. I don't have problems taking it out of drive and the tranny shifts fine. Should I anticipate any problems in the future or is this something that should be taken care of. This is my very first Vette so I don't know if I am capable of correcting it myself or having to take it to a shop to have it done. If I take it to a shop, how many hours do you think it would take to get it repaired. Most shops here in Az run between $90-125. I have to admit I am low on cash but I still want to be able to drive it and if I take it to a shop, I need time to save the cash. Has anyone have any ideas? I should would appreciate some help on this. One other problem I have is I am limited on how high I can raise my car due to the ceiling height. Thanks to all!

The red indicator has a prong that fits into a fork on the shift lever; as you move the shifter the indicator follows. Either the prong is not engaging the fork or the prong is broken off.
Remove some console screws to inspect the shift indicator to see what is the issue.
If the indicator prong is broken off you will need to buy a used indicator or console. If the prong is not engaging the fork, adjust it till the two engage as you lower the console lid.
When I got my 89 it had the same problem, the pointer had jumped out of the holder and I just needed to reinsert it...If yours is broken, below is what you need...You may find it cheaper somewhere else....WW
