I am going on the Caravan this year and my Firestone Wide Ovals are showing their age. I am going to go with 275/40/17 all the way around to get a better selection of tires. My car is not a daily driver but a pleasure car that normally only goes to shows, cruises, parades and other club activities. No track or snow but I do go out during the winter months whenever I can. I am looking for the best combination of comfort (I will be spending a week with my wife in the car) and handling. I have spent the last two weeks reading and talking to people and have two tires I like Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport or Continental ExtremeContact DW. What are your thoughts or experience with either of these? Any other suggestions at the same price or less?
you'll most likely get as many opinions on tires as the number of available tires out there. so here's mine. why not stick with the firestone's? we've had several set's on my 85 with no complaints. IMO, excellent bang for the buck, and VG customer feedback on the tirerack's site. the bridgestone's most likely are a similar tire, since it's the same company. you can compare all three tires on the tirerack's site.
Bridgestone Potenza's are noisy but, otherwise a good tire. Continental DWS tires are Awesome!... Quiet, Sticky and Great tread life!...
I had the Continental DWS installed on my '96 CE. They made a drastic improvement in the cars handling in the rain. That's important here in Florida. In the summer, rain is in the forecast almost every day.
The DWS and the DW are two very different tires. The DW stands for Dry -Wet the DWS is for Dry-Wet-Snow. I can get the Continentals local for about the same as Tirerack. I am really leaning toward the Continentals now. I have 9.5" wide rims on all four corners so I can go with a square setup at least I will be able rotate front to back to even out wear. Keep the info coming!
Yes the daily afternoon gulf coast localised downburst. I'm not sure of exactly what my Pirellis are are but since my car only did 1K a year for most of it's life, consideration of performance in rain was probably not a factor.
The day I brought my car home for the first time it was raining and I didn't know what to expect from the tires so I took it REAL easy. They do okay though. Age more than wear will have them replaced and wouldn't hesitate at this point going with something similar.

Thanks,

T, I've driven a C6 w/DW's on the tail of the dragon. Also did some easy driving too.
And I changed the original runflats on my C4 to the DW's. Have about 600 miles on them so far.
On the C6 I was able to push it hard enough to make the airdam rub the ground in the tight corners. Those tires stuck like glue and NEVER squeeled. Not once! Not even when going hard enough for the rear to step out and the traction control to snap me back into shape.
I only drove the C4 w/the original runflats about 100 miles then swapped them.
My overall impression is that the DW's have an initial softness when turning. It seems to take a little sidewall flex to get to the point where your actually turning. Doesn't have that razors edge type of feel. Once you get past that initial softness they are pretty much solid and stick like glue.
The C4 rides a bit smoother. Haven't had a chance to push these DW's yet. Only local driving and took one road trip on them. (just fine in the rain btw)

The Continental DW's are more of a High Performance Summer tire and the Continental DWS's are more of a High Performance All Season tire with a longer tread life, which is what I needed...Plus, I received a $70 VISA card as a promotional rebate from Continental!

I really don't need the All Season tire my car is more of a play toy. Thanks for the info. I'm really glad that the Continentals work so well on the Corvettes it's hard to make a decision when the reviews are for cars other than Corvettes.
I have the Conti DW's on my 89 which is a nice weather car too. Not a DD. The tires are awesome. Tons of grip in the dry and wet. I raced in an autox in the rain back and March and they only lost traction once which was my fault. Too much gas coming off a slalom. I highly recommend.

As long as you have the 9.5 rims, look at 285 40 17's. Discount tire direct or I got them at a Firestone service center. Lots of good reviews, even better than Conti's I believe and a little cheaper!
Conties.
You won't regret them in the least.
Only reason I didn't go with Continentals with my current wheels, was I wanted to try another tire and get a more show car kind of tread design.
The DW or DWS Extreme Contacts won't do you wrong. The first couple weeks were eerie on mine, since they were so quiet and gave very little feedback. After they broke in though, they were fantastic tires.
I went with General Tire GMax tires for my ZR1 replica wheels. I haven't had a chance to really push them yet, but they've stood up to the rain fairly well. Very quiet.

I like the way the General Tire GMax tires look but they don't come in 275/40/17 size.
