I just wash my black canvas top with car wash soap, wash mitt or micro fiber sponge and rinse with clean water from a hose. I was warned never hit the top with high pressure as it will remove the weather proofing treatment causing leaks.
Used 303 protectant for many years.
They recommend using what they call a multi purpose cleaner (303) with a soft brush in the direction of the cloth. Along the cloth "grain" not sideways
I used the final step UV protectant and the top never faded and bird droppings wiped right off.
You can buy it off the interweb or even Walmart

Pretty much sums up what I did to my 86 this year (first year I've owned it). Between the cleaner and top dressing treatment, water beads up nicely and the top looks great. Doubt if it's been treated in years due to coming from New Mexico.
