Who else thinks they are rice
I think they are rice and look stupid unless you have a real grandsport
I think this post may have been meant in jest but either way, I love hashmarks on Corvettes. I own a Grand Sport and it doesn't bother me in the least. Heck, I've got them on my Z06!
I do NOT condone putting "Grand Sport" (or ZR-1 or Z06 or whatever) emblems on a regular production Corvette, however. But even so, the owner can do as he or she pleases.
C'mon guys, lighten up. Our cars are for fun and enjoyment and if we like the looks of the "hash marks" and want to personalize it, go for it.
I tried to put the red hash marks on my black '90 coupe last week but I screwed up and put a wrinkle in one and couldn't make it right so I peeled the tape off 'till I get the nerve to buy another set and try again. Any tips on the installation? ( I thought they looked sharp on my car - except for the wrinkle ).
Secondly, a little history: The "hash" mark system was used by racing teams at Lemans and Daytona for all five Grand Sports between 62-63, as well as AC Cobra teams. "Yes" I said the "C" word. Take a look around for old racing pictures from the early sixties. Cobras carried the marks as well. Usually in yellow. This was not an exclusive Vette thing. Lastly, the stripes where used in different colors for identification of individual cars heading into pit lane. Chevrolet used the GS styling package to give the car a distictive racing look. It is not exclusive to the Corvette.
I think that they look great! I am going to put some silver ones on my car,and now thanks to this thread I know what they represent! Even though i would have still put them on becaue i just thought that they looked cool. BTW for you people that have them...It was easy to put them on and they are removable right?
Hell, who knows, rcolling, this stuff gets weird, doesn't it? Good looking car.
Damn it, I like the GS stripes on just about any car color (especially a dark color, yellow, or silver), but a red one. My car... red.
I am like Art, I love the GS stripes but I can't seem to find a color that I like with my Red Coupe. Maybe if I put the white skunk stripes then I could put the blue hashmarks to be a reverse Grand Sport Coupe.
Can I live in your garageZR1 91??? Please!!!!!!!!! I'll sleep right next to the 63!! I am a man after your own heart. I like the GS stripes. I think they look neat. And I like what they represent.
If you open the hood mine says "Grand Sport". Does that make it not Gay and not Rice?
Yeah, mine, too. Or is it rice from the factory to put "Grand Sport" on the throttle body of an LT4-equipped regular-production car?? The more I think about it, the more I want some red GS stripes to go with my throttle body. :p:

Well it depends on how we define "rice". If "rice" equals putting "Type R" badges on a Acura that doesn't have a "Type R" motor under the hood then Putting "GS hash marks" on a non GS Corvette equals "rice". I do not like "rice" at all but it seems with every car group we tend to apply double standards.
The hash marks that are used on C4's were a factory option for a special car that payed tribute to the original car, it had a special drive train and appearance package designed for it by GM. Very much like "Type-R" badges are designed from Acura to represent a special limited production drivetrain. Again it all depends on how you define "rice".

The hash marks aren't the same as the Type R badges... if you had the Grand Sport Badges on the side of a non GS, that's the same as the Type R badge.

I disagree, the Hashmarks are just as much a part of the GS package as the badge is. They are both unique to the GS only. The GS hash marks as well as the GS badge have only appeared on 1 factory car from GM, with the exception of the original GS of course.

So I guess it's rice to have GS wheels too, since they only came on the GS... or 5 star in general, unless your car is a ZR1 or GS?!?! What about C5 wheels on a C4?? I don't believe GM did that either. So all of that would be rice then????

If that is how you define "rice" then the answer is yes. Like I said before it all depends on how you define "rice". My only point is that we (and many other car groups) tend to have double standards when it comes to the topic of "rice".
IMO if you are going to call "rice" on a Acura that has Type-R badges but no Type-R motor then most of if not all of the things mentioned here including the hash marks should also be called "rice".
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
