Hi all. C4 1990. i was thinking of getting an auto electrician in but first wanted to know if this is a simple fix or something he will even know about in an american car. when i turn my lights on the indicators come on permantly and obviously blink when turning. i dont like this and not even sure if it's legal in the uk. is there anything i can do myself to disable this so the lights and indicators all work as a normal uk car? thanks

Which lamps specifically are you talking about? Amber/red, front/rear on sides? Front facing lamps in bumper? Maybe indicators inside on dash panel?

hi to be more specific. when i turn the lights on all the lights light up. all indicators front and back. red lights obvioulsy at back and all lights down the side oranage and white. i imagine this is called "cruising lights" but i dont want to drive at night like this. some guy did mention it's some kinda kit fitted to the car but maybe standard on usa cars. the indicatores blink on and off fine but like i say are on permantly with the lights

You could remove the bulbs at the four side markers (amber/front, red/rear) and not loose the function of the directional signals (front/rear) I believe. There's no way to defeat them internally because the feed is through the directional switch which also supplies the power to the tail lamps in the rear.
I don't believe you can defeat the always on with lamps on and retain the "flash" function from the directional switch for the "side-markers" (cruising lights).

I'm in the UK, and my car was sorted as follows. Rear indicators; the previous owner fitted extra rear indicators as shown in the photo. Alternatively, you can buy amber rear lenses, and rewire the lamps to work as you need them to.
Rear indicators
At the front, I replaced the original headlamps with UK spec Halogen units from Keith at Eurovettes (it had Japan-spec left-hand dipping sealed-beams, so it dipped correctly, but the light output was CRAP!!). The new lights have a proper lens and H4 bulbs, and are great. They also have sidelight bulbs built in. It is a fairly easy job to find the side-light feed to the orange lamp, and cut it. I made up 2 little looms to feed the supply to the headlamps, but was careful to attach it carefully leaving enough slack for them to rotate. The only thing I haven't solved is how to get round the fact that the lights only rotate when the headlights are turned on. I just turn on headlights, and back to sidelights. I hope this helps. My m.o.t. tester was happy tp pass it anyway!!
