Default service engine light

New member here... after driving for approx. an hour +, the "service engine light soon" appears on the display. Is there a sensor or unit that should be checked?...nothing else seems to be wrong with vehicle. ( '87 C4). It goes away after key is off, and stays away until another long driving period.

Welcome to the forum

Take it to a local Autozone/O'Reillys or something similar in your area. Mine scans codes for free.

Default light

Take it and scan it, on my 91 the light would come on after about 5 miles. It was an egr code, found out after pulling the upper intake the connector for the sensor to the egr was loose. went ahead and replaced the erg valve.

Default eng. service light

Thanks....I went to Advance auto and they don't have the code scanner for that year anymore; advised me to find and buy the OBD1 wherever I can because no one is using the old technology anymore. I'll check the EGR system per your advice, and see how that goes.

I'm not new to working on cars ... just limited by technology and lack of required tools. Haven't worked on a car since leaving Chrys. Eng. (Highland Park World Headquarters) in 1974.

See this link to learn how you can pull codes on your OBDI vehicle using just a paper clip.

http://www.corvettephotographs.com/c4vettes/ecm.htm

Post what you find here and someone will help with diagnosis. Note that a code for EGR valve does not necessarily mean the part is bad, it indicates there is a problem in the monitored electrical circuit, good luck.

Use paperclip trick and pull the code.

Probably EGR.

OK... Looks like a good idea. I'll give that a try at first opportunity. BTW....I may have a fix for the anti-lock brake relay for those that might be interested. As soon as I can get some more info, it will be not as cheap as a piece of tape over the light on the dash, but it will render the anti-lock system re-operational w/o the expense of trying to find an expensive, junk yard or non-existent relay.

Again, thanks for the assistance.
