85 vette first start sometimes hard to start at first, starts and then fires up check engine light comes on, shut off restart no light??? injecotr issue? alternator issue
The check engine light indicates a computer code telling you it found an error or problem in one of the monitored systems. If you take a paperclip and bend it into a "U" shape and insert it in the A/B terminal (under the steering wheel next to your right knee. The A/B are the two far right at the top. Now turn on the key, don't start the car. Your check engine light will flash ones then twice (indicates a code 12 telling you, your communicating with your computer). It will flash 12 three times. Then it will flash and stored codes three times. Just count the flashes. When all the codes have been displayed it will flash 12 three times.
Record all the codes. Now lift the hood and disconnect the NEGATIVE battery cable for 15-20 seconds and then hook it up again. This will erase all the codes.
Start the car and drive it and see if your check engine light comes on again, which it probably will. CHECK the codes again to see what code your getting. I had you clear all the codes because you don't know what old codes may have been stored in the computer. So now you are no chasing old potential problems....but are focused on the current issue. Remember that the code(s) displayed are for a system. So a code for the O2 sensor may not mean that you should replace the sensor, it might be a broken wire or disconnected wire to the sensor.
