I am plugging along with my 1986 that I bought at auction. Have fixed several items so far including putting on a new convertible top.
New item is all the gauges do not work. The RPM/Speedo work fine, but oil press/temp, charging, coolant temp, etc. do not. I have not pulled the dash apart, yet. Is there a printed circuit on the back side similar to what I found on my 1979?
Don't light up? Don't register - read zero? They are connected to the center switches.
Yea, they do nothing. I flip the switches on the center and they have no affect on the gauges. By the color coding, it looks like for gas level the tank is full as all the bars are green. I know that is not right as I just finished draining out the old gas and putting in 8 gallons of new and it still shows full (all green bars).
I also have no bright to dim on dash lights regardless of having headlights on or not and turning the headlight switch. But, I can live with that for now. I need to figure out the important stuff, first.
Go to Batee.com for all the info on dashes you can stand. They even repair gauges as well. I would first check the GAU (I think) fuse and the LCD fuse. Well check all your fuses, lol.

Thanks,
The sensors for those gauges are referenced to a ground on the side of the block above the oil filter. Those grounds were move to a stud on the bell housing around 1989 or so. If the ground connection is missing or broken then your gauges will not work.
The dash dimmer on the headlight switch only works at night. It also affects the brightness of the radio and HVAC control head, so check to see if those are dimming. During the day time the dash brightness is controlled by a photocell behind the hole above the speedometer.

Thanks, I will check out the ground on the engine. Like I said, all the gauges do not work. So, the common ground could very well be the problem......
