I just changed trans filter on my 89 , filled it up , went through the gears all good , go for a drive and only have 1st and 2nd and reverse it starts out in the od and drive but hit the shift to 3rd and nothing there , fluid level is right at top line , fluid was brownish that I drained out , help
Unfortunately it sounds like you need a rebuilt Sometimes high mileage brownish color indicates that it could have a problem. By changing the fluid you may have caused that problem. I personally would not.(fluid brownish color) o change the fluid unless it was red color. Many years ago I changed my daughters fluid in her Honda prelude after she bought the car and the fluid was brownish. After the test ride the trans was shot. I should have left it alone
If everything worked (1,2,3&4) before the change then if the filter was done correctly nothing should have changed. Do another change (don't reuse the fluid) making sure that the seal mentioned above is done properly. If you were having issues before the change and that was the reason WHY you did the change it's likely of no use. You didn't mention how much trash was in the pan. First guess is maybe there's more than you're telling.

I doubt it would be worth the fluid. If it came out brown, I doubt it would have more life and wouldn't be worth the fluid price. I would take the trans out and send it to say Rossler Transmission for rebuild, flush the lines in the meantime and be happy.

Maybe NOT BUT the OP I don't believe passed on the entire story. If in fact everything did work and it was a maintenance project the fluid isn't wasted and he's not mentioned if he 'tinkered' with anything else while he was doing the service or NOT.

I did say that it was shifting hard however I did have all of the gears and had it on the hiway before the change , I did not tinker with anything else , I do have a knock sensor I have to replace the pan was clean as far as any metals

Still, brown fluid isn't a good sign. Does it smell burnt?
