I agree about the Harbor Freight jacks - just make sure the jack has fluid in it. Sometimes they're not so careful about that. But if you are willing to spend a little more than $300.00 here's a lifetime floor jack on sale -
I have 2 Harbor Freight lightweight aluninum floor jacks. Easy to pick up and throw in the back of the truck. Also an aluminum jack from Costco. Finally my old iron job from a good parts house; almost 30 years old. I can't pick this one up.
He who dies with the most tools wins.
Yet another recommendation for Harbor Freight. I bought the 2-ton low-profile for my Corvette and other cars; easily the best jack I've ever owned, especially for lower vehicles! But beware: at 93 lbs., it's a back-breaker! And with whatever jack you purchase, be sure to bleed it first!
I have a Harbor Freight "lightweight racing jack". I've had it several years and it has been fine all that time. That said, I ALWAYS put jack stands under the car rather than rely on the jack. China can make really good quality stuff when they want to, but I don't trust them in this case.
I was in O'Reilly's one day and they were having a sale on Craftsman jacks. The picture on the box looked EXACTLY like my Harbor Freight jack. I have a lot of Craftsman tools that I bought in the '60s and '70s and it's kind of sad to see the degradation in quality over the years.
I have a pair of HF floor jacks. Ones the low profile aluminum frame while the other is a heavier steel unit. Both work just fine, one for the Vette and one for the truck.

Seems like HF is "thee" place we go to buy jacks! And, like you, I NEVER trust them either. Jack stands are placed under the frame after the car is lifted. And, if they're not in the way, I leave the jacks (I use two at a time) in place as a redundant support, should I get too rambunctious yanking on one thing or another.
I also have a Harbor Freight floor jack and it is just fine. Great price, good jack. However when under my Vette I also have ( four jack stands ) and they are always under the car whenever I am under the car. I am in no hurry to meet my maker. Safety first always.

Ain't that the truth! I know a family who went on holiday, leaving their 17yr old son at home. Came home to find him in the driveway crushed under his car. Been dead for several days......Just dreadful.
I looked at a lot of jacks before buying. Most today originate from China, not much choice there other than color.
Here's a little mod I made though that helps. I have the Jackman's jack adapter to lift the rear. I didn't keep wanting to remove and mount it to a jack, so I made an adapter that fits in the cup of the jack. It won't slide etc as it's fitted inside the cup of the jack and has worked out well
Add some good jackstands and you're set. I've got 3 pair and between that and the 2 jacks, it works out well for me.
How is your life at stake, all your doing is jacking up a car?...Now, If your not using jack stands your an idiot, and your life would be at stake with any jack ... I have 2 of the Harbor freight steel jacks , one is over 7 years old and still works perfectly..I can buy 5 "very good" HF jacks for what you pay for one of (The Best) jacks.....If you don't do mechanical work for a living sometimes you don't need the best, just very good will suffice....WW
