1989 convertible. I left the house and noticed the ABS light was on, turned off ignition and restarted ABS light stayed on. Drove approx. 5 miles and noticed engine temp up to 240" pulled over, main cooling fan was not running. Turned off engine checked coolant and relays all looked OK. Tried to restart and car acted as if battery was very weak and would not start just clicked.
Had wife come to give me a jump, car started and went about 4 miles, dash and headlights getting dimmer car lost power, I turned right trying to find place to pull over hit a bump in the road and all lights came on, car started running fine ABS Light off. I figure it is a short or loose connector so I am about to tackle it. Any suggestions about where to start checking will be appreciated. Mike
Thank you Forum members, while awaiting a reply, I browsed ABS light problems and ran across Ray Quayle's suggestion to check the 10 amp Gauge fuse, I found that mine was blown. Replaced it and ABS light went out after starting engine, but also the ammeter showed 13.5 volts where as before it was 10.0 volts and the cooling fan now comes on at 225 and off at 212. All is well.
(Confession) I had been doing some work on the conv top hinges and
remember hearing a "Pop" as my carpet knife accidently met a wiring harness. ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE NEG BATTERY CABLE.
FYI, the alternator will not charge without the gauge circuit working, i.e., good fuse. Hence the 10 volts and going down instead of the 13.5 volts after replacing it.
