Default refresh old floor mats

I have the typical scrunched up floor mats in my 87. the new 85 we just bought has nice new ones and i love how they lay flat.

so that got me to thinking, i have a bottle of plasti dip (spray on rubber coating, not as durable as bedliner but similar in nature) and why don't I turn the mats over on a piece of wood, staple them upside down to the wood to keep them flat, then spray them with this stuff to "stiffen" them up.

Anybody done anything like this to refresh their floor mats?

Applied some coating to the back of them to make them stay flat?

Cheers, VikingTrad3r

Default Plastic coating

I've not used it for that purpose but I did try it on some tools at one time. Over time there was some chemicals that weeped out over time, especially when it go hot having left some in a toolbox in the truck.
I'd be afraid over time they'd bleed into the carpeting of the car. Instead of adding something to the base, what about putting them between some boards and weighting them down to see if they'll flatten out that way?
An alternate might be taking one of those flexible cutting boards and cut it to shape and doubleback tape your mats to that to hold them flat?

Just some random thoughts. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I just tried coating my "shop hat" with it and i'll see if it keeps the hat material stiff enough when it dries. I've been thinking of bedliner if it dries harder so we will see. im guessing i am going to try it because i have a can of it here and its either try to add a new backing to the carpet or buy new.

ill report back in a bit.

Funny, I just resolved the same problem in a different way. Cut some 1/8" plywood to the mat shape, cut in half at the bend area, added a couple of small hinges there, and then screwed the mat to it using short black screws. All of this is invisible under the mat. Now it doesn't bunch up under the pedal anymore.
