Are the original '87 nose emblems a slight V shape across the crossed flags, or straight across like the gas door emblem?
I finally got the CORVETTE letters off the back of the car and the emblem off the gas door. However I noticed that the nose emblem has the crossed flags bar going across in a slight V shape. The gas emblem is straight across. The nose is also contoured to fit the hood whereas the gas emblem is flat. My nose emblem had no adhesive on it and was really easy to get off. The others were glued on so strong it was a royal pain to get them off. Which makes me wonder if the nose emblem wasn't relplaced once before. Also it was kind of cool how flexible the CORVETTE letters are. They're really bendable rubberized.
The emblems on my '85 were the same way. No goop on the hood. I'm pretty sure they were original. I got my new ones from The Last Detail and they are the same as the old ones.
:seeya I just got new emblems for my 92. The new ones from chevy are actually plastic now so the paint wont buff off like the old ones. You are right about the older emblems, the one on the hood has no stickytape but the new one did. The back had sticky tape and the new one for it also. The front emblem does V to fit the contour/flow of the hood line. Also, the flags after I think 1990 were black where the older ones prior to 90 were red on one side. They are a pain to get off, I used a staple remover to start to peel mine off.
Thanks everyone. They're faded enough (the red looks nasty) that I thought they were original, but the no glue in the nose threw me for a loop.
I got a GM gas door emblem about a year ago and it was metal. Now I'm almost ready to install the bugger. ;) Are the nose emblems now plastic from GM? Did that change in the last year? Or did I just get lucky with mine?
Juliet, I replaced my 87 emblems this week.. I bought them from a Chevy dealer. Both were metal!!!! Gas door had adhesive as well as the nuts.
The hood was also metal.. Did not have adhesive only two studs..with metal self threading nuts.. If you need tips for installation for the front let me know..
Great news Rick. Thanks! Sure, send on the tips. I still have to finish buffing the paint & putting on several coats of the shine master glaze before I put the emblems back on. BTW, I lost one of the speed nuts down in the hood cavern. My magnet on a stick couldn't get it back out either. :( I'll have to make a magnet on a string to try again to fetch it - I've got spares (they use those things on shark emblems too) but don't want one rattling around in there. ~Juliet
 Yea, Rick is right. I think the newer emblems that have the black instead of the red are plas-teek and have the stickytape. Probably to help keep them from being snapped or ripped off in ....I'm not saying this, in atomatic car washes and stuff like that. The older metal ones were pretty robust, they just lost the black paint after awhile. Hope this helps.
Thanks everyone. I've got another related question for you though. :) I was parusing the parts manual looking for the rear backup lights diagram (another post) and noticed that there are 2 plugs indicated here which cover up the access holes on the underside of the hood where you get to the back of the nose emblem. Do any of you have them on your corvettes? Are mine really missing or was that something they added later or stopped doing earlier? The 1988 vintage GM service replacement part number was (is?) 4410574 group 12.981 1" rubber plug. Thanks, ~Juliet
Mine didn't have plugs, but might have at one time.
Advise for replacing the front emblem..I used small pieces of double sided tape to hold the emblem in place. I then used a small piece of the tape to hold the nut to the socket to extend into the holes to keep from dropping them..It worked fine..
good luck
