Default Corvette Mods HID Install Instructions

Okay folks, here it is, an actual step by step, real installation instruction thread complete with glossy photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one (a little nod to Arlo Guthrie and Alice's Restaurant, beings this is Thanksgiving week and all)!

I have a lot of photos so it will take me a while to edit them all and post. I will update this thread as I have time over the next few days.

Anyway, here we go:

Like all good instruction sets you should have a list of required items so you will know if you are missing anything or not before you dive into the install. Unfortunately, I did not have such a list and sure enough, I was missing the headlight wiring harness. No wonder the installation instructions provided by the vendor made no sense at all!

The brass resistor was included but I did not use it. Still not sure what it is for?

Here is what I initially received (Note, this is for both headlight and fog lights):

You can see there are two sets of fog light wiring harnesses. I think they erroneously substituted an extra fog light harness in place of the headlight harness.

Here is the missing headlight wiring harness that they sent me. Included in the photo is the harness installation instruction page. You should look it over before starting the install. Check to see how each wire attaches to its prospective connector. Most can only be plugged together one way so you can't mess it up.

Start by opening the hood and use the manual override **** to crank the headlight assembly open. Turn it until the headlight is about half way open.

The headlight cover can then be removed and set aside in a safe place.

Next remove the four screws that hold the headlight retaining ring on. There are two on top and two below. Then you can carefully remove the headlight ring and the light itself. Unplug the three prong connector from the headlight.

Helpful tip: Place a towel in the well below the work area so if you drop one the small screws you wont have to spend time trying to find it and fish it out.

Start on the driver's side headlight. Install the new HID headlight using the retaining ring and four screws. Make sure the wires on the back of the headlight are run through and are accessible from the bottom.

You will probably have to crank the **** to rotate the light assy back around.

Next, you will have to run the wires from the harness through the side of the headlight assy right above the rotating ****. You will see what is basically a hinge pin that the assy rotates on and you want the wires to be as close to it as possible.

I used a bread twisty to temporarily hold the wires together (actually, they are from trash bags, not bread).

Here is the wiring harness instruction page too. It tells you where each wire goes.

Once you have the wires fished through you can start connecting them. I removed the bread twisty and then connected the three prong connector to the original female headlight connector.

Then the large double prong connector to the ballast. It can only connect one way.

Next, the smaller two prong connector. Again, it can only connect one way.

Then the round ones. Pretty simple, really.

Then you cram the whole mess back into the headlight assembly. They provide some wire ties which are used to secure the ballast to the assy. I left the wires loose so they wouldn't bind up when the light flips over.

Then you can put the cover back on making sure not to pinch the wires.

Repeat the procedure on the passenger side. There is no three prong connector that plugs into the original headlight harness like on the driver's side. The original female three prong will just be left hanging there so to protect it I put a plastic bag over it (wire plug condom? )and zip tied it.

There is a red hot wire that goes to the positive terminal by the battery. The wire provided is way too short so I had to splice in an extension for it to reach.

Now the tricky part. There is a fuse box just in front of the battery with a positive terminal on it. There is a red plastic cover that you have to remove to get to the terminal. Pull the cover straight up to get access to the terminal bolt. The wiring harness has a ring terminal but I recommend replacing it with a fork terminal that you can slide one the bolt. To use the provided ring terminal, you have to pull the bolt all the way out. However, the bolt is very long and will hit a metal brace blocking it before you can get it all the way out. You have to wiggle the bolt to get it out and then it is impossible to get it back in.

I had to remove the battery to get access to it and get back together. This photos shows where the bolt goes. It doesn't show the new harness wire that goes on it. The wire I'm holding was already there and the new wire goes on top of it.

None of this is required to do if you replace the ringloop terminal with a fork type that can slide on without having to remove the bolt.

Next was the ground wire. I first connected the ground to the handy stud just above the rotating **** and thought I was good. When I tested the lights however, they were flickering and not getting a good ground.

I spliced in another ground wire and attached it to another ground on the frame. I did this on both sides and it worked great after that.

After that you just have to route all the excess wire and secure with wire ties so they don't catch on anything and you are good to go!

Well, in theory anyway! For some reason the passenger side headlight stays on high beam only. The driver's side will go from low beam to high beam and back just fine. Not sure why but will update this thread when I hear back from Corvette Mods on it.

Other than that, all is good. I haven't actually driven it at night yet so I can't give a real world report on how they work yet. Will do that tomorrow night. They look good though!

I have the fog lights done too and will continue with that report later.
