Default Does anyone know what this is?

Hi,

I have been tracking down a terrible rattle coming from my hatch and have found out that it is this rectangular plastic bracket with wire wrapped around it on the back wall of the hatch under where the carpet would be. Does anyone know what it is? I am just wondering if it is very important or if I can just unplug it and delete it. I already have many other systems removed from the car so I am not worried about creature comforts. Just wondering if it is vital to the operation of the vehicle. I will try to get a picture of the bracket posted when I can.

Thank you for your help,

Tommy

Antenna for the passive keyless entry system (PKE). There is one each door and one in the area you mentioned. Picks up the signal from the PKE key fob; receives commands from the fob to lock/unlock doors and remotely open the rear hatch on the coupe. Was introduced to the C4 in 1993.

Would look like this:

Thank you that is exactly what I am talking about. My power locks broke a couple years ago and I thus stopped using them and became accustomed to just using the key. I no longer carry the fob. Do you see any adverse affect to just unplugging and removing the antenna? Do you think it would trigger that annoying SYS warning in the cluster that seems to get tripped by any weird electronic related thing?

You are welcome!

I don’t know if it will cause an SYS warning to occur. I have never disconnected mine, so I can’t say. The good thing is that someone will be able to answer that who has more knowledge about it than I do. I don’t think it would be an issue though.

I think I'm just going to unplug it and test it for myself. I'll drive around with it unplugged for a day and see if anything weird happens. If not I will just unbolt it and put it in the bin with all my other spare parts. Thanks a bunch for your help.

Sounds good! Keep checking back, maybe someone will offer some trouble shooting advice.

Ok so I was bored and just decided to test it out right now. Unplugged it and drove around the block. No SYS light and the trunk still popped just fine using the button on the door. So I decided to drill out the rivets and remove the antenna completely. The awful rattle is now gone completely sooo much nicer. Still have a few other rattles but that is expected with a heads/cam motor with longtubes, no cats and 12in dynomax bullets haha. Just filled in the holes where the rivets were with weatherstrip glue and called it a night.

No SYS, that’s good to hear. Glad you have it resolved.

Heads/cam motor with longtubes, no cats and 12in dynomax bullets, no need for a radio either, you’ve got mechanical music going on that’s better than the radio!

haha funny you should say that. One of the rear speakers was blown out and I could no longer hear the radio over the exhaust so it has actually been removed already also. Took a good bit of weight out of the car ditching the head unit, and all the speakers. I mounted my Garmin in the hole in the dash where it used to be haha So I guess you could say I have integrated navigation now.

It all worked out, everything happens for a reason.

Sidebar. If you ever are searching for a shop to repair/restore your OEM radio equipment, Dr. Don’s has a pretty good reputation: http://www.doctordons.com/corvetteradios.htm

He is actually only an hour away from me. I dont have any interest in restoring the factory stuff. When I put a radio back in the car I will just go aftermarket but I might see if he would be interested in purchasing my delco bose gold head unit to refurbish and sell to someone else.

That’s a good plan since Dr. Don’s is an hour from you. I’ve seen some pretty nice setups here on CF and on the ZR-1 Net Registry that incorporate a flat flat touch panel with navigation and all the digital music bells and whistles.

I have to call it a night, enjoy that C4!

That must be the "castanets" sound I keep hearing when I hit the right size bumps. I've been thinking it was the shade moving side to side in those little holder clips! Knowing what is causing a rattle doesn't bother me nearly as much as one of those mystery 'what the hell is making that noise' rattles.
