Default Turn signals intermitant

Hi Guys, I just picked up an 86 and have been going through it. I found a problem that is stumping me. My turn signals go in and out. When they work, everything is normal. When they don't both indicators on the dash light up and stay solid. All of the bulbs work fine when they are working. Could this be in the cluster?

Unlikely but possible, start by cleaning all of the sockets very good, removing all of the crud from the sockets that the non-conductive (dielectric) grease has been reduced to. Use all new bulbs and reassemble. As long as you're cleaning you might just do all of the exterior sockets and re-bulb them all. When reassembling use the proper non-conductive(dielectric) grease for reassembly. If you've still got issues then maybe cluster but I highly doubt it.

Inspect the wiring on the socket back-side when you're cleaning. You could have intermittent caused just from deteriorated wiring at the socket back-side.

You don't need to overdo the non-conductive grease, save it for spark plug to wire terminations also.

Thanks I will do that. I did notice that the grease in the sockets was a little on the hard side but I figured if the bulbs comes on I am good.

Just to be on the safe side, the front turn signal bulbs are 2057 amber, the small side markers(front and read) are 194, the large clear side markers are 1156(front and rear). I haven't been into the rear tail lights yet(they work), are they 2057 as well?

Update- All sockets cleaned. Still don't work. Here is a twist, with the headlights off, I get nothing. With the headlights on, I get all light's on on the correct sides and they blink sometimes. Could this be in the headlight switch? The dash cluster is shot, just ordered a rebuilt. Power in that is intermittent a best. When the seems somehow the high beam indicator is linked to the turn indicators, when they come on dim, so does the high beam indicator. When I turn on the high beams, the turn signal indicators come on nice and bright with high beam indicator.

Any thoughts?

Oh, forgot something, I also changed the blinker relay gismo. Didn't change anything, but what the heck, it was worth a shot.

I had something similar in my 1985. It was in the harness connection at the bottom of the steering column. The pins for the turn signals were loose inside it.

I had the same issue as well. The connector for the turn signal switch was not seated properly. Located under the drivers side dash. Are you using any LED bulbs?

I bought a new switch. Haven't put it in yet. I'll check the switch connector first. It's weird I drove it around town today and it started working. Not sure for how long though.

That's usually how it goes. lol, The switch is a PITA to replace. Be sure to order a Horn Contact retainer. Mine turned to dust as soon as I popped it off.
