this fall i read "all corvettes are red" and liked that one about the C5 development, then after that i read "corvette from the inside".
by Dave McLellan (former head engineer). Granted the book is really a history of the corvette from inception in '53 up to the development of the C5, and he at the end sort of talks about the "future, perfect corvette" that could be developed.
but i really sort of thought the book was really selling how great the C4 was for its time, and of course he seemed to be very proud of the ZR-1 and a lot of talk on it is given (which is interesting).
and i don't fault him for that, b/c that was his era in charge. it is a good book talking about development and compromises, which working with any big co. will be. i personally thought the most interesting part was reading about Zora, and all his ideas, and how he really championed the corvette and tried to improve it's performance....so, because of this i have asked for xmas the bio on his life and can't wait to read it!
but over all, i think this is a great book for corvette lovers...and of course for me, it helps fuel my dreams of getting one someday.....
just curious if anyone else has read it....and their thoughts....
Great book! Dave has more to do with the C6 and C7 than most people think. The C4 was the first modern Corvette and he had to compromise on many things on the car. The C5 was the full realization of what he saw the Corvette as. It was 90% done when he left in 1993. The C6 is nothing more than a refreshed C5. The C7 while significantly new, it does not break any new ground in concept from the C5. Just significant improvements in the basic concept. I think the front-mid engine rear drive has reached its limits with the C7.
