Probably best place to go is Crutchfield - they have incredible resources and will be able to tell you if the item you're looking for will fit your application, plus providing exact instructions on what has to be taken apart and how to make it all fit. They also provide adapters and the like for cabling.

I have a Pioneer AVIC-D3 multimedia AV Navigation head unit in my 96. It was installed by the previous owner. I personally would not have picked that unit. It works fine but does not support I-pod charging with the factory Pioneer I-pod cable harness. I would have purchased a head unit that supports USB thumb drives instead of the I-pod as they are easier to move music on and off of.
