Default replacing carpet overkill???

After 51 years of working I will be retiring in a few days. Now it is time to replace the carpet in the vett. I have been pondering how much to do. I have the precut pad with the foil on one side. I have seen where some people have used the insulation from Lowe's with foil on both sides. I have the carpet. It is auto carpet but not the original replacement. The carpet does not have a rubber backing. Need opinions on whether or not to use the Low's insulation then the precut insulation and then the carpet. Will I have less road noise by doing this? Will I be creating problems I am not aware of? Should I just use the precut insulation. Will using all three be like beating a dead horse? Could it be that I am now officially senile? Thanks for any advice.

You might find it helpful to put that in your forum profile.

I just installed the same type carpet over FatMat (heavy-ish), which functions to lower the resonant frequency and helps with heat reflection, somewhat. Were I to redo it, the rubber-backed would be my choice. I cannot speak to the Lowes product.

I did not replace the unworn knee bolster, rear cargo, or door Carmine-colored carpet but airbrushed it with RIT dye for color match, with good result.

Congrats on the retirement but I find I have less free time!

I've had a couple experiences with re-carpeting; my C4, and wife's C3. Both times I used the carpet from Mid America, and am happy with it: fit right, & has the rubber backing where needed.

I would also recommend the liquid (green) adhesive they sell. The spray-on adhesive might be good for some light trim work, but my experience has been unfavorable if used anywhere else. (But, if you just hafta use it, apply it, and then apply a second coat. Important!).

The hardest part was the hush panels. Getting that old glue off was a bitch. I has best luck using a Dow Chemical "ORANGE CITRUS" adhesive remover, but it still took a couple hours or so to get that glue off.

But! That said, you won't believe how much new carpet brightens up the looks of the interior. Using common sense and floor mats, etc, should keep it like new for years!
