Remove or bypass? Bypass can be done with a simple U shape hose, removal will require a do-able but tedious task of dismantling the dash. I replaced my heater core a few years ago, had to contort to some interesting positions.

I just watched a video yesterday on how to do this on a C4. Looks like a nightmare, but I'd still do it myself. It can be done without removing the whole dashboard. Just a real pain in the ***. Youtube FTW!

I did mine 3 months ago took 3 hours. Make sure you remove the dash cover it is only a few screws, it makes it so much easer. Check my post on tech side

I was able to do it without removing the entire dash in my 1994. I will tell you that it was freaking terrible. Prepare yourself to be upside down for hours and hours on end. I puked in the alley by our house twice while doing the job just from have to be inverted so long up in the dash. It took a good 11-13 hours (don't remember exactly), and at one point I had to lubricate a screw with my own blood for fear of upsetting a mirror and flashlight combo that I finally got shining in the right direction. It's a bitch man, a real bitch. Good luck.

Default Not bad

If you don't need heat then don't bother removing the core. Take the expansion tank off. See video in sticky section. Redo the hoses so they come and go to the engine and radiator. The hose ends are a strange size so you will need an adapter or two and hose clamps. Any auto part store can help you. Drain the heater core before you put it back together.

I think I know the guy that made that video.... It's definitely a pain in the *** and there is no way I would do that again unless absolutely necessary.

Here's my 94 with nothing but the heater core which is behind the black plastic cover. I pulled my dash apart for other reasons. I can honestly say it's all back together.

More pics at my project link if need be.

My picture doesn't represent what is needed to be removed to gain access, I just posted it to show where it is. By no means do you have to remove all that. Hopefully you didn't think that. It is a scary picture though. If you don't need heat, by-pass is the way to go. Not worth the effort to replace, too many plastic parts that could break in the process.

My understanding is the engineers started with the heater core and build the car up around it.
