I am 16 years old. I have been working for 2 years and have about $7,000 in the bank. By the end of next summer I hope to have about $10,000 - 12,000. I was wondering what could I get for about $8,000? Does this sound reasonable or am I crazy? Is it possible for me to get insurance on a C-4. I posted this same topic on the C-3 board and everyone said that insurance would be imposible to get. I do get the good student discount if that helps :D. I want a vette like you couldn't imagin. If I didn't want one I wouldn't be wasting my time working.
Please state your opinion!!! The first post that I got to this on the C-3 board the old man slammed me. It put me in a bad mood all day. When I got home, form work, and checked the post everyone said that I sould follow through and get one. That picked up my spirits a lot. I was just wondering if insurance would be more reasonable. Grant it that the cars are a little safer then a C-3.

Re: 16 years old (69chromebumper)
All I have to say is go for the dream!!! If you want to make it happen youll find a way to make it happen. Yes, insurance for a male your age will be horrible but its horrible for any car at your age. Sorry, thats just a nfact of life. I paid a fortune on car insurance for my chevy Luv that was my first car ages ago (it was brand new at the time so that should tell you how long ago it was). 8k will gte you one of the older C4's. Mines a pristine '91 base coupe L98 6 speed and I paid 12k for it. My advice is to wait and save as long as you can stand it to get as new and as nice a one as possible. I shopped around for almost 6 months for mine. Welcome to the Forum and I hope to see pics of your C4 soon
For 10K you could get a perfectly good Vette. Look into Insurance, it will be expensive, but if you don't get discouraged and keep looking, there is someone out there who will insure you. Don't be afraid to ask why the rates are what they are, you might get someone to lower them. Once you find the lowest insurance rate, be sure to mention you are going pay cash for the car, deduct a year's premium from your savings and then go shopping. You will be able to find a good Corvette for what you have. It won't be show quality, nor will it be a 10 second drag racer, but it will be a whole lot better than sitting home thinking about owning a Corvette. I thought about owning a Vette for years..finally just decided to get one last year (for my 32nd b'day), it's not a show winner, it's not awesome fast, but it is a convertible Corvette.......and no matter what faults it has..it's better than talking about it.... Good luck, be careful with that fast car when ya get it.....don't decide you can't own one before you try.
Mine will be for sale soon and will be in your price range. I don't pay much more for insurance then the rest of my friends. I have an 1984 with 85000 miles.
Good Luck and Keep the dream alive. $ 10,000 to $ 12,000 grand is in the ballpark for a good C4 Vette. Good luck with the insurance, that is going to be the hard part. I :mad Insurance companies.
...My advice is to wait and save as long as you can stand it to get as new and as nice a one as possible...
That's good advice! As tough as it may be to wait...i think you'd be more satisfied. Not that there's ANYTHING at ALL "wrong" with an L98!! It's a strong torquie motor with NO OPTISPARK!
I don't know your situation. However, if you can get one of your parents to buy and insure it, then put you on your policy you will be better off. I remember when I was your age and wanted a Corvette. The only thing that should get in the way is health and education.
Go for it. Life's too short to drive Mustangs and such :D By the way I just turned 20, insurance isn't bad and the only thing I've had to replace in a year and a half is a $30 heater core
Go for it young man. I agree with the others here. Especially the idea of having it registered and insured in your parents name with you as an authorized driver. I have my son's Grand National as well as my Corvette and a 93 SHO all on the same policy with the 2 other family cars (mini van & crown vic.) He's 17. It's not real bad but I'm in Florida. Prices are a little higher in Tampa.
Shop Shop Shop for insurance, look into on line purchasing (the agent is the middle man- Good & bad).
Good luck brother and welcome to the Forum :seeya :flag
Congrats on saving up cash for your car. If you can save up that much in a short time, you can afford to pay the insurance and maint costs. Just keep working as hard as you do.
Plus you are maximizing the buying power of your money buy paying cash. Every day you wait, the more money you have and the prices of the used C4s fall. Plus you won't have a car payment with interest.
My son bought a 76 Vette when he was 17. What we did, was title the car in his name and mine. I then put the car on my insurance and listed him as primary driver. Since Texas insurance laws force the premium on older cars to be lower than newer cars, his insurance ran about $200/mo. I had a good agent that worked with us and figured this out. Did the same for my second son when he turned 16.
As far as you buying a Vette. You bet. Without younger people coming into this hobby, it will be gone and the Vette will be history like the MG, Triumph, etc. :seeya
