That happened to my 85 also, it cracked at the top of the spring inside the engine crossmember where you cannot see it.
When you pull the spring it will be pretty obvious, it will look ok in the car. Has the previous owner lowered the car?
There are shims on top of the spring where it attaches to the crossmember, adding or removing shims will change the ride height a little but not a lot.
Time to find a new spring, check the 3 digit code tag on the spring to get the same spring rate.
