So one of my tail lights (the inner right one) has gone out. It will illuminate when I press the brakes or put my right turn signal on...
I have no clue what this means. Obviously the bulb is working then right?
There are two filaments in the the bulb. One is for the running light (tail light) and the other is, a somewhat brighter one, for the brake/turn signal.

I have had my vette for over ten years and never replace a bulb on the back so really don't know but some bulbs have double filements one for brakes and turn and one for light sounds like that is your case replace the bulb one bad filement
I took the bulb out and checked for it. There was a lot of yellow gunk. I removed it all and that got it to work :-D ! In the process though, I warped one of the screw head that goes in the lens. hoping the bulb doesn't go out anytime soon now.

That yellow gunk used to be white dielectric grease that the factory used when assembling.
You can get small tubes of dielectric grease at any auto parts store. It is used on sparkpug terminals, light bulb sockets and other electrical connectors to keep moisture out. Moisture in an electrical connector = corrosion. It's also good for rubber weather seals around doors.
i've replaced the bulb already. Originally, the light didn't work at all. Now that I've replaced the bulb...just the blinker and brake works.
I replaced all four at once, figuring as long as I was going through the pain (literally) of doing it, I'd make sure I didn't have to do it AGAIN. Sure enough, one of my brand spanking new Chinese bulbs was out in two weeks.
