I have a 1986 coupe. I want to install new windshield and weatherstripping. I called the glass place today. They suggested that I also get "inner molding" that goes under the windshield. I can't seem to find this part. Does anyone know what this part is called and do I need it?
It is part #2 on the diagram.
It would never hurt to have the correct rubber and inner moldings on hand before beginning the project. But, be sure you arrange with the provider that you can return any unused pieces for credit, should you not need them.
For sure I'd want to have my own rubber on hand, because some aftermarket rubber is either to hard/soft; either can be an issue. as for the inner moldings, that is optional. New ones (if you can find them) make it easier (faster) to replace because you don't have to clean the old owns up for reuse. But, unless the old windshield is leaking now, I'm betting the ones you have will be fine (after you clean them up, that is). RTV is your friend, don't forget!
I've used Safelite 3 times (two on other cars, once on my C4), upon initial recommendation by Marc Haibeck (one of our professional ZR-1 gurus). I'm very impressed with their glass and quality of work.
I just had the windshield replaced on my 92.I had the A pillar/top edge weatherstripping on hand from Willcox beforehand. They had the top metal strip that the weatherstrip attaches to. I used Speedy Glass.
I contacted two glass companies and both companies suggest I have the inner seal. The outer seal is easy to get. I can not find even a part number for the inner seal.
