I'm about to replace my water pump this weekend, and the manual says that I have to de-pressurize my fuel system. That's all fine and dandy, but it also says I can't do this near a source of ignition / naked flames.
My garage has a gas drier with a pilot light and my water heater in it - this is the only place that I can work in. Am I screwed then?
Also I need to drain and discard the old coolant, how much do I need to buy to replace it? I think the manual said something like 4 gallons but that sounds rediculous. Also it gives some crazy GM spec number for coolant that I can't find anyware, so what brand do I gor for?
I think you'll need to remove the fuel lines where they connect to the fuel rail, so that you can remove the AC bracket so that you can remove...........you get the picture.

Yep, that's pretty much why you have to do it. I wonder if there's a way of doing it without having to remove the fuel lines?
I replace my water pump and did not depressurise the system. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!! Two weeks later it was still pumping gas. I don't think it is possible to do the job without removing lines. If you depressureize the lines and then remove and cap outside the garage, then you don't have to worry about the gas pilots. Of course you do get to PUSH the car into the garage.
The whole job should only take about 3-4 hours for your first time. I say just do it out in the drive way so you dont take a chance with the flames and gas. 4 gallons, eh? Well, I did end up with almost (4) 1 gallon containers filled with coolant and water after I was done with my h2o pump swap. Of course I had to do it twice because Im good like that :D !!! The 2nd time only took me about an hour to get everything apart and back together. Now I feel certifiable!
