Default A/c problem

Converting from r12 r134a. Low side pressure good. High side pressure very high. Not getting any cooling. Replaced the expansion tube (orfice). Still have same problem. Pulled vacuum and held very good. Any suggestions welcomed. This is on an 87 vette.

Check that the condenser if clean and that the fan is running.

It sounds like there is some kind of restriction in the system somewhere then. You will have to evacuate the entire charge and check piece by peice. I would use nitrogen to "blow out" each part of the system to clear the blockage.

Yes. And when the cooling fan comes on the high pressure does come down but when it shuts off the high pressure steadily increased way beyond the pressure required for the ambient temp.

What do you mean by this?

There are many Variables that effect High/Low system pressure, such as Ambient temperature, Humidity, Engine RPM, Electric Fans.. etc etc.

On an 80° day I would expect to see around 30psi on the low side ( this by the way equates to Evaporator temperature) I'm guessing your Condenser is not efficient enough to Cool the Hot 134 Gas back into the proper Gas/liquid state. This could be do to air blockage at the coil, or it's just not efficient enough for R134..
