The compressor will not turn on if the refrigerant is low. There is a pressure switch that tells the computer when the refrigerant pressure is there.

Maybe this will do it for you:

That's the first thing I intend to check on the A/C system. I don't think checking codes on the CC panel is an option for me since mine does not have the automatic control. See photo above.

OK. Disconnected battery for about 3 hours. Reconnected and checked codes. First code was C72, followed by H72 and H26. H15 code relating to engine temp sensor was gone.

Turned key off, waited about 10 seconds and checked codes again. just H72 and H26. Started engine and let idle. After about 20 seconds, check engine light popped on and cooling fans started.

Would a possible low refrigerant level as suggested by Cliff Harris trigger the light and fans? I'm not sure how the other two codes would relate to the fans coming on...
On a positive note, my wife drove the car to the NOPI show yesterday in 95 degree temps. Even idling for 15 minutes to get in the gate, temp never got above 220.

like I said in my first post GM designed it so when the SEL comes on the cooling fans come on. that is working as it should. you need to correct the codes my replacing parts, or what ever then clear the codes and drive it

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood your original post as it appeared you were questioning whether the cooling fans and the CES came on together, not stating that they should. Car runs great; just don't like looking at the CES all the time!
