I was told by a mechanic today that the noise I thought was my u joints was instead my Automatic transmission. He said it is just a matter of time before if gives up the ghost. Anyone have one done recently on a C4. What should I expect to pay? Is having the old one repaired cheaper or better then having a rebuilt put in?
I paid $950 to have my 700r4 rebuilt. From what I've read I got a super deal and most people pay about $1500.
The 700r4 was redesigned in late 1987 and the later version is much better than the earlier version. If you need/want to replace yours I would try to get a later trans. I put a 1989 trans in my car that a friend gave me. Much better than the '86 trans.
Yeah, get a later trans if you can. The shift program on the early 700s were crazy. All the vintage magazine articles complain about the trans hunting at anything below 1/2 throttle.
This car has a different ECM in it as the last owner installed the Xram intake. Will the installer have any problem with that? The last owner had this transmission rebuilt and added a shift kit. I was told the shift kit is partly why my transmission is burning out so early. It has about 30,000 on the rebuilt and I never beat on this car. Any suggestions are welcome.
I'd get a second opinion on the transmission. Shift kits typically don't "burn out" transmissions, as they typically decrease the time for a shift, which has the life-extending benefit of reducing overlap. This makes the mechanic's diagnosis questionable, IMHO.
I'm not saying for sure that it's NOT the transmission, but before you go and spend $1500 or more, wouldn't you like to be 100% certain that it's the problem?
I had two rebuilds in the 10 years I had my 1984 Cross-Fire. The root cause was a bad TV Cable case. It had cracked from engine heat and collapsed when the wire was pulled. Two different shops did not find the problem. Be sure that the cable is not your problem now and be sure to have the shop that does the transmission install a new cable with the replacement. Its good insurance!
