OK, I replaced my stock Bose stereo a couple years ago with a JVC KW-AVX740 DVD receiver connected to the stock speakers. Well the Bose speakers finally craped out and I need to upgrade. I'm looking for suggestions for a new speaker/AMP set up that will sound awesome.
I don't want a box or anything like that in the back of the car, I want to use the existing speaker enclosures.
Go there and type in your car info, and it will give you a list of speakers that will either fit directly or fit with some modifications. For the 90's model c4 the fronts you'll be limited to 4" diameter and the rears can accept either 6.5 or 6.75 inch speakers. If you have any doubt, you can chat with an advisor and they can guide you as well. You can probably get speakers a little cheaper from Amazon, etc. but Crutchfield's customer service is top notch. Been using them since the 80's. Good luck.
In my 89 coupe I used 6x9s in the rear using the original boxes and put 5.25" in the doors, also using the original boxes. I could probably get away with 6'5"s in the doors. Couldn't use the original grills unless I flipped them over.

I just replaced the whole audio system in my 94. I used Pioneer everything 4x6s, 6x9s, head unit, amp and sub and I am very happy with the sound. I know u said u didnnt want a sub but for the few days that i just had the new head and smaller speakers without the sub and amp it was still very good.

I did the same thing minus the sub, went with all Kenwood components. Also ran all new 16 ga speaker wire, big fun.
Installed a powered remote antenna too, it works great if the engine's off but poor reception with it running.

I put Sound Storm Labs SSL GS369 6x9" speakers in the rear and SSL GS246 4x6 speakers in the dash in my 1984. I bought them through Amazon and both pairs of speakers were a little over $50 total including shipping. The head unit I have is a Kenwood KDC-BT762HD.
So far I've been really favorably impressed by these speakers for the money. I tried them out side by side at Fry's compared to some more expensive speakers from Kenwood, Alpine, Polk, Kicker, etc., and I frankly couldn't tell much difference, I mean a little but none of the more expensive ones really sounded "better".
They were significantly less expensive on Amazon than they were at Fry's, about 1/2 the price. When I saw that I was sold.
I just ordered two 8" shallow mount subs($85) for the rear last night to install in the stock locations. I am going to order a small sub amp(less than $100) for those. Then I will be ordering a set of component speakers with a crossover(between $35 and $80) for the front.
I plan to install a double din receiver with GPS, just hope I will have a decent view of the screen with being a manual shift and all. I don't care for the aftermarket single din Sony that is in it now.

With just subs in the back and your only full range drivers in the front the balance of the mix you will get is probably going to be horrible with way too much bass. If you listen to rap it will probably be fine but if you listen to music the results will most likely not be very satisfactory. It may not be quite as bad if you put 6.5" 3 ways in the door panels along with the 4" or 4x6s in the dash. If you think you need a sub I'd go with 6x9 3-ways in the back stock location and put a single shallow mount sub in a box in the back. In a C4 sized interior one sub should be more than enough bass with a moderate sized amp.

I listen to just about everything but yeah I kinda thought that but figured if it was too much I could always buy a thin enclosure since they are shallow mount and install 3-ways or a component set in the stock locations like the front. Didn't mention mine is a 92 so no door panels per say or dash.
