Default basic opinion needed

Hi again,
I just posted about a curious rpo code on this 85 c4 I have,
I am also curious for your opinions regarding this car on part of the restoral process, I know the c4s are not the top of collectability.
but as I am restoring this car to sell it,
should I keep the car as original as possible
or add mods to make it more desirable
I am putting a complete new interior in it and repainting to the factory 2 tone silver. along with mechanical replacement of worn out parts. rebuilding tranny ect. but I do have an axle back salleen exhaust in the box, c5 wheels, and was considering some cold air mods, however I do not want to add them if it somehow devalues the car
it is a z51 equipped car with the 4 speed, and everything number matched. but I do not know with the c4 if it even matters.
thank you for your input

Original might make it more desirable for most, just because mods sometimes mean less reliable. I agree with antfarmer2; I hope you are doing this for fun, don't expect to make much profit.

Hi BFB. I also have a 85 it had 56K miles when I bought it and thought seriously about just restoring it. It needed a paint job and numberous minor repairs, no engine or drive train problems. After getting an estimate of $2,500 for original paint it was too much and would never get my money out of it I changed my thinking.

The repairs and stuff you mention add up to quite a bit and may excede what return you can get, but that's your choice. It gets expensive real quick using OEM replacment parts, even after market can get pricey.

What ever you decide have fun.

thanks guys I appreciate the feed back. many of the things are already complete on the car. im keeping an accounted eye on current values vs cost. what I left out is I have a really decent c4 with a blown engine to use more oem parts. with a special arrangement with a body and interior shop. ill probably part out the other c4 as soon as I get what I need from this one. when I bought it it already had a new clutch, new aluminum radiator, ac still works , motor had been gone through, heck it holds 89 psi oil pressure at cold idle, supposedly he also added a cam. so I am having the tranny gone through paint and interior, the saleen mufflers came new in the box with the purchase, along with brand new tires and c5 wheels. and im putting in a new weatherstrip kit. so I wont make a bundle but if I can get market price. I will be ok and some one will get a nice ride.
the car is actually fun to drive
anywise didn't want to over mod and drop value as you all know values are narrow on these cars. thanks again

my 2-cents - FWIW -- keeping it stock, and in the original configuration is always the best way to go, and as for mods, significant mods, you're lucky to get 10 cents on the dollar at resale. restoring C4's will cost more that you'll ever get in return, so take that as a word of caution. just a quality paint job on an early C4 most likely will exceed the value of the car.

w/Joe and the others. The C4 is NOT a rare commodity. It is a "break even" at best, and likely a money looser - even if restored to stock (preferred) and definitely NOT modded if you intend to make money on the project (based on personal experience).

My car was completely painted last year, and it cost me significantly more that $2500, and that was after it was largely disassembled prepped, primed and sanded!! As for mods, unless you have a reputation like Lingenfelter or Calloway, mods are likely NOT going to make you any money.

Do what you want, for the fun of it. But, don't expect to get rich (with a C4, especially an L98 C4.

Yep, it's worth investing in the car to keep it... not so much to sell it.

Unless that arrangement includes free labor, you are going to spend a lot more restoring the car than it will be worth when you're done.
A LOT more.

being close friends with the owners of both shops does help quite a bit, but yes it is going to be tight. but it is a good car and the price was just to irresistible, especially after I drove it lol
