Default Spindle Grease

Just purchased new MOOG hub assemblies for my 89 C4. Does the cavity of the spindle need to be packed with grease? It was completely clean when I removed old hubs. If so what type?

No packing. The bearings are sealed.

Interesting that you should ask. A friend told me a story I always thought odd about a fellow that packed the cavity because of the appearance of the ABS wheel and not realizing what it was felt it needed packed. The '91+ has the ABS aspect of the assembly also sealed inside the bearing and the spindle is a pass-through for clearance.

There are people that don't use the ABS, put a plug in the sensor hole and fill the cavity with a lube to in theory "cool" the bearing assembly. Effective? I have no idea.

Keep it clean, my rear wheel bearings did 170,000 miles with many track days, they were nice and clean and "SEALED" as Cliff mentioned.
Don't forget the spindle nut torque has changed, my shop manual stated 80 foot pounds. However now 170 foot pounds is recommended, i did mine to 160 foot pounds.

The OP is on the front and there's no spindle nut. I understand he didn't specify front but anything '90 or earlier it can be assumed that this is relevant. '91+ it's irrelevant as there is NO CAVITY and on the rear regardless of the year there's no cavity.

On the rear there is NO CAVITY, the ABS sensor and the reluctor wheel/tone ring are both exposed components and there no way "NICE AND CLEAN"

Thanks. Thought so but instructions from MOOG said otherwise. It didn't make sense to lube a cavity where nothing ws exposed.

When the C4 was on top of the food chain, there were "greaseable" hubs for sale on CorvetteFever Magazine. For you nOObs, CorvetteMagazine was the top notch Corvette reports, DIY, projects, afermarket installations and more before this forum was invented in 1999.

I wish all those C4s aftermarket parts would be available today.
