What is the function of the lower shift boot on a 95 6 speed? Is it necessary? And is it a simple fix? One post says remove 4. acorn nuts and pry the boot off and another says the driver's seat and console side panels have to come off. What's the story here?
Go to my 1994 restoration thread. I just did mine. It was a pain, but much needed. That rubber boot keeps all the heat and noise out of the passenger compartment. It made a huuuuge difference in my c4. Mine was torn to hell.
It's screwed and glued if it's never been removed. Otherwise it will come out easy. It goes over the lip. You'll see. You don't have to remove driverside panel. Just loose all the screws so you can get to the left side of boot to pull over the lip. Yes it's a pain, but possible. Look at the pics in my thread.
And yes you should have it. If you have an exhaust leak, the fumes will come in.

Thanks for the feedback and the encouragement. I just went out and tore off the old one and will be ordering the new one momentarily.

Your welcome. If you have any other questions just post up.
EVLGTO gave you good advice. It is a PITA working the new boot into place with the console side panels in place, but it can be done. Patience will get you there.
I secured the new boot to the ridge on the tunnel on my '94 with zip-ties. Worked out just fine.
