Default Shocks

I have a 1984 Vet that I bought new,31 years ago,is there a shock I can install that will make the ride a little more comfortable. The car has 71,000 miles is that about the mileage that I should consider changing them, they have never been changed. Tried the old push down on the car and see if it bounces it doesn't,the car is still stiff as it was from day one. Could just be me getting older. If anyone has any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

If there not leaking I would say your just getting older. The springs are the stiffness shocks keeps it from bounceing.

I don't know just how much new shocks could affect the ride of an '84 BUT whatever you decide if you do change shocks don't toss the old ones. Regardless of which product is on your car they will have resale value or it might be good to pass on with the car.

Let's see just what product is on your car. Since you purchased it new some RPO checks might be interesting and might influence maybe a decision. On your SPID label in the rear storage compartment post all of the 3 digit RPO's that begin with the letter F. Those would identify all of the suspension components I believe to see just how the car was optioned. That information might be used to determine maybe to make a reasonable decision.

Very common comment of the 84's ride, your only option for a softer ride may be to change to softer springs.

OR lowering the air pressures first. I believe there might even be a TSB suggesting the reduced tire pressures for those that comment on the "harshness" of the ride. The TSB may have suggested 30 psi. I've not seen it for a while. That is I believe a reduction from 35 psi so it should be certainly felt "seat of pants".

Default Shocks/ride

Fellas thanks for all the info concerning shocks/ride and possible fixes on the 84. Think I will decrease the air pressure in the tires from 35 down to 32 for a start. Won't change the shocks. Going to replace the tires sometime this month, just found the paper work showing the tires will be 10 yrs old soon.Have plenty of tread no signs of dry rot, just thinking the rubber may have become hard . Just have to accept the fact that the 84 has and will always have a stiff ride. One good thing my Financial advisor (Wife ) says it's okay to start my look for a 2005. " Just can't seem to find it in me to let the old girl go. LOL

I was going to post back to this thread today and ask if you knew how old the tires were and/or suggest checking the date codes if you didn't recall. New tires should certainly improve I'd think the "feel" and I'd go to maybe 30 just for a start.

Post back!!!!

Which "old girl" are you referring to: the '84 or the financial advisor?
