ESCORT! I have several 8500 X50's (which are probably two levels behind Escort's most recent offerings) and they have saved my *** numerous times, both in cars and on Crotch Rockets. They still do.

I tried a Valentine 1 several years ago but couldn't handle all of the false alarms and confusing lights and buzzers.

HOWEVER... the problem we face today is a lot more insidious than Radar. When your radar detector says "Laser," it's already too late! Radar puts out a wide signal which carries over hills and bounces off objects, allowing it to be detected with plenty of warning. Laser sends out an almost pin point signal and needs a specific target (like a headlight or license plate or bumper) to bounce back from. When you see a police officer aiming his speed device like a short barreled rifle, he's using Laser and... if you're hit, you're already toast. So...

Allow me to suggest the very best companion to your Radar Detector: a Laser Jammer! It's illegal to jam radar without a specific FCC radio license. No such restriction applies to Lasers. If hit, you're Radar Detector will still go off indicating you've been tagged by a Laser Gun BUT... if you have a Laser Jammer, it will send back a null reading as though the officer's device hasn't found a good target yet. In those few seconds you slow to the legal speed limit and flip off the Laser Jammer. Officer then reads a legal speed for your car!

I've used Blinder Extremes on both my bikes and cars. I've been "painted" by Laser many times and have never been cited. I paid around $350.00 for each of my Blinders maybe ten years ago. They're probably up to six or seven hundred today. WELL WORTH THE EXPENDITURE!! With a decent Radar Detector and Laser Jammer, you'll probably go decades without a citation!

Just my $ .02.

Radar detectors only work when the radar is on. If the Officer "triggers" it your radar detector is a nice looking electronic device.
Radar travels at the speed of light so if youre faster than that...

I purchased an Escort Passport MAX back in 2013. They have some new versions ever since it came out, but let me tell you, this has saved my *** so many times.

It has Escort Live, where you can connect to your phone and other users are able to report where cops have been sighted, (for those pesky radar flashers and laser users). Also has Defender Database, that tells me where the red light cameras and speed trap cameras are located. And I purchased a 3 year warranty with it as well.

Also, it has a GPS feature that allows it to block out a radar signal if you have passed it 3 times in the same location. This makes false alarms very infrequent.

I've had this thing go off about 2 miles away from the cop. I highly recommend this radar detector, and probably the newer version as well I would recommend.

MY V1 has saved my bacon plenty of times. I can't imagine how three light displays (direction, type and strength) can be confusing, but to each his own. I will admit that with todays omni present radar signals from doors to collision avoidance systems a V1 becomes almost annoying.

I resolved this issue by using the V1 app on my android to turn off the X band advisories. Still working on tuning out more of the unwanteds. ANother great feature of the V1 is the remote display that causes the V1 to go dark on the dash while keeping the remote lit in a better viewing location.

My two cents YMMV

Best of the best :

I personally will be going with this.

Not "the best" but the only real sub $500 remote mount completely hidden unit.

+1

I haven't been cited since purchasing my V-1 in 2004. Love the arrows on the remote stealth display. Great service and support as well.

Agreed! However, even with "instant on" radar guns, a good detector will pick up the signals aimed at cars ahead of you. Of course, if you're the first in line and he's well hidden...

I've had a radar detector since they were as large as footballs and weighed several pounds. Every time I share the following my wife is sure I'm going to jinx myself but... I haven't had a speeding ticket since 1984!

I have a 2011 V1 and it false's SO much, that I don't even use the thing. All it does is false. It will false in the middle of no where. It false's driving though NFW, Wyoming! The thing is totally useless because it's virtually going off all the time.

But then again...what do I know, right?

If you want to sell it cheap, I wouldn't mind trying it out. If I cant get it to work the way I want, then ill just throw it away.

I wasn't looking to sell it, but I might as well, since all it does is sit in my console. Would you be interested in $100+ shipping?

Here's a couple of observations and items I've learned over the years. 1/First off, we are all part time drivers with limited resources. We buy devices of questionable quality with unreliable results. LEO's are full time professionals who are schooled in enforcing the law. We plop our $500 toy on the dashboard and think we will outsmart the law. You can do your own math. 2/ The devices used by law enforcement are being upgraded constantly while we get device updates only afterward. 3/We are laid out on the open road driving down the center for all to see. They can hide anywhere. 4/Using anti radar and lidar devices may be in violation of FCC laws. You don't want to mess with the Feds. Also I've read of charges of law evasion and legal intervention if you use anything to defeat the radar/laser device. 5/It is possible for a trained law officer to issue a ticker based on his professional opinion. While it is most likely that it will be tossed out of court you will have to show up at whatever expense that may be. While there are arguements for each of these statements its obvious that in front of the judge you stand alone. Personally I try to keep the speed within a reasonable limit, stay at the limit in areas most likely to be patrolled, at the appropriate times. For example around here the most likely place to get tagged is Sunday morning on the interstate. True it seems like a safe time to speed but apparently the cops feel that way to. I use a simple, old X,K band radad detector since most of the law enforcement still uses older, cheaper equipment. Especially in smaller towns. If its laser or instant on radar you're screwed. Good luck, and drive safe.

isn't it cheaper in the long run to obey speed limits?
