Default oil filter adapter leaks

I just started to get a leak from around the oil filter , It was hard to see so I jacked it up on the side and gook a hand mirror with a flash light and focus on the area around the filter, after I wiped it clean I could see oil building around the two bolts on the out side diameter of the filter while it was running , that is where the leak is coming from, I tried getting a socket on them to check for tightness but was just to hard to get at from laying on the ground,, I have a 96 lt1 and from what I have been able to see It might be different from the earlier models the bolts are on the inside diameter of the oil filter when the filter is removed, any one have experience with this and how was it fixed,,,, thanks

Bob,

Check out this thread....

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...s-leaking.html

I ended up making my own gasket from thicker gasket material and made the holes for the bolts undersized so the gasket was snug on the bolts. My fix has held for over 2 years now without a leak.

I have also heard that the bolts are a little long and bottom out therefore not getting a tight fit between the adapter, gasket and block.

Bow tie guy.....in my case, it was not the rubber gasket that was the problem. If you look at the gasket set you reference thru Summit you will see the round gasket (dark colored) with two holes. My gasket was paper thin. This is the gasket that was failing for me and oil was being forced down the bolt shafts and leaking. That is why I went to a thicker gasket material and made the holes for the bolts undersized to hug the bolts.

The two bolts holding the adapter to the block go into blind threaded holes in the block. One thread on the Forum about this oil leaking problem stated that the bolts were too long. If this was the case, the bolt would bottom out in the hole and a thin gasket would not fully seal between the block and the adapter.

For the later adapter I've seen 5/16-18 X 1.875 mentioned and I do believe I've seen mentioned previously (not on the CF) to be selective with the gasket and o-ring choice. I believe I'd use the OE/GM package and before the attempt maybe knock a thread off of the bolts. What do you have for bolt length presently? The correct bolts aren't just "off the shelf" spec'd bolts. I've seen that mistake made when comparing OE/GM hardware years ago.

Here's a link to the later hardware:

Number 410 for the bolts.

thanks zr1, from what I have read this is not unusual, will use the same bolts and add a washer just incase it does bottom out, cant hurt . now all I have to worry about is getting it high enough off the ground to slide under the car, will jack each side up by alternating each side till I get it there with good strong adjustable stands. although I did find a diy garage that I might look into. using a lift would make it a lot quicker. im guessing this is a 30 minute job.

I believe the correct bolt has a 1 - 2mm pilot and is not threaded to the end and I'd think the removal of a "thread I mentioned" earlier actually might not disrupt any threads. I don't recall how the head is fashioned but a washer might actually enhance a problem if it weren't a very tight ID compared to the shoulder of the bolt.
