Default Rear window removal

I am trying to remove the rear window from my Targa. I see two torx bolts in the middle of the window and the two outer fasteners have a slotted rim. How do I remove those?

The glass is also glued to that hatch hinge piece.
There is a very good chance you will break the glass before getting it apart.

Yes needs to be removed as an assembly.

The 2 torx bits only hold on the stop light
The two round discs need a special tool to undo
The window hinges are held on behind the helo plastic trim
There is 2 on each trim
If u are removing the metal trim from the glass
Remove all bolts and stop light
Then the two round discs
Then use a heat gun to heat up the glass and a blade to slowly remove the glue
Between the glass and the metal piece
The bolts for the stop light and the round discs have a spacer between them allowing the glass
To sit off the metal piece
Be careful not to damage them as u cat buy them

I have just done the same on my car for the resto

Hope that helps

OP - It's important to know why you want to remove it.

For simple removal you do NOT separate the glass from the hinge half that's attached/glued to the glass. If for some reason you wanted to separate that, it would be done "off the car" or should be.

If you have a FSM it's covered but if not here's a parts image that should help you understand how. You need to either have a correct spanner or improvise for the glass to hinge plate. Once opened you should be able to "ZOOM" this image.

The glue on mine was pretty weak after 30 years and seperated easily, and unintentionally.

I want to sell the car. The rear window was tinted 20 years ago and is now purple. I think if I try and remove the tint it will ruin the defroster. I picked up a rear window for $50. Thanks for the information.

try spraying it with 409 cleaner than wrap it in plastic wrap.if you make cuts between the lines it will help.

Do a search on tint removal you will find many ways to do it and NOT have to use a razor blade. Good Luck

I tried to remove the targa hinge that connected to the glass and ended up with 1,000,000 pieces of tiny safety glass all over the garage. Only later did I find out about the glue, or polyurethane glue that is used to hold everything in place.

So I think it would be a dangerous thing to try and remove only the glass from the hinge.

You can always bring it to a tint shop for removal

I used a steamer. It takes a little while to heat and peel the tint but it does a very good job. I borrowed one from a friend. It was a Conair http://www.walmart.com/ip/Conair-Han...eamer/19720708. I tried peeling it at first, big mistake. I have heard of using a thin black trash bag. Cut it open and spray the outside of the window, lay it on the outside and cut around it to fit the glass. Open the hatch spray the inside and press the plastic on the window. Do this on a hot day...well I guess now is not the time, or turn your heater on and let it sit. The steamer I used worked well, it was just a little hard working over the rear fenders. I'd do it again this way, it takes patience and a towel below to catch the dripping steam. Do a search on some videos using a steamer or a trash bag. There are quite a few, some better than others.
