Can this interior be saved?

Just got back from some more work today. Pulled the seats out, much of the carpet. At the very least, it will need all new carpet. Mid-America sells a kit to redo the entire interior for a decent price. All the sound deadened is coming out as well. Looking on CL I found a few promising leads on a set of used seats in good shape. Found a crashed 87 coupe with black seats for a decent price. The leather is worn but he only wants $100 for both, and all the electronics still work. Unfortunately, I took no pictures of my progress, but the appearance is slowly improving.

Good on you for saving this car. However I got to ask. Just how in the world did that interior happen? Windows left down? Targa off? Someone couldn't be bothered to close it up? I know sometimes family and health issues get in the way, but no one wanted to keep the critters out? Shame you have to do all this 'nasty' work. But glad you are.
