The antenna was not going up and down, though the motor was running.
Looking at the various videos and information I removed the motor and opened the motor up. The cable was broken and jammed. took out the pieces and the antenna would go up and down.
Tried to remove the antenna to replace it and no luck. It comes up but not out. it feels like the bottom of the antenna stops about half way out.
I had the same problem on my 88 last year, motor runs but no mast to grab onto. I have “heard” that the white plastic ribbon that controls the mast can be grabbed with a small stiff wire like the gas line, telephone line companies’ plant in the ground. I ended up removing the antenna motor from the car and replaced it with a new / old original motor ($169) from GM stock off EBay. Not the most pleasant job but can be done in one day. If you do this wear eye protection and mechanic’s gloves help.
You can also disassemble our motor and install a new mast with ribbon.
Thanks everyone, worked on the antenna this afternoon and got it to work.
Not quite sure why but the mast suddenly popped out of the motor after I pulled it hard enough. Putting the new mast in was easy and now I have a fully functioning antenna.
